The President's Corner

On October 12th, our club was honored to have Bill Eck, District Annual Giving Chair, as our program. Bill talked about how fortunate we are in this country, and how we can do so much good for less fortunate people through the "magic of matching" of the Rotary International Foundation. Many Rotarians become Paul Harris Fellows by contributing a total of $1,000 to the RI Foundation, either all at once or over time. Our club encourages members to be sustaining members. Many do this by adding $100 per year, (just $25 per quarterly statement) to their dues of $175. Since the goal is for every Rotarian to give $100 every year, we are also encouraging members to increase their $25 to $35 or more to help offset the members in less prosperous areas who cannot make the $100 per year. Our club will not make public any lists of who gives what amount. It is each member's business. We thank you all for considering giving to this Rotary cause.

FYI…

  1. The Board of Directors has decided not to make a club donation to the Tournament of Roses, Rotary float. If you would like to make a personal donation, please see Dan Hoopes.
  2. Please bring your "previously read" copies of The Rotarian magazine so Frank Loner can put them in prospective member kits. They should be in good shape - no coffee stains please.

A “fishy” story…

These are pictures of the Bull Reds we caught on our recent fishing trip to Texas. During the fall large adult Red Drum moves from the gulf to the shallow bays where the females gather in large tight schools. These rafts of females are packed so tight their backs have little space between them so the water appears Iodine Red, thus the name REDS. Unlike the wimpy Salmon who starve themselves on their one and only final mating run, REDS like to eat and mate each year, getting larger and larger.

The Texas Record is 51.5 pounds. It took us several years to get the locals to give out the secrets for getting a big Bull Red. Each time we took their way, improved it, until this year we finally figured out all the little things between tide, direction of current, water level in Corpus Christi bay, bait, place, and presentation.

Several REDS came to dinner. We landed one big one apiece. Dave had another on the rocks that I couldn’t gaff in time and I had one strip 30 yards of line and break it before I could get to my rod. Bottom line… we figured it out.

Dear Rotary Youth Exchange Friends,

Rotary Youth Exchange will be holding their District Interviews for the year-long high school exchange program the first weekend in December. For this event we ask Rotarians in District 5450 to assist us during this weekend with the interview process. It is an exciting and fun weekend for Rotary Youth Exchange.

The interviews will be held at the YMCA in Denver from Friday evening December 3 until around 3 pm on Sunday December 5, 2004. To get to the YMCA take I-25 to the Colorado Blvd exit, take Colorado Blvd South. The YMCA is on the west side of the street right before you get to Yale.

If you are interested in joining us, please return the attached* response form advising us of your availability during the weekend. The third page of this document is a tentative agenda. It indicates the times we need help during the weekend. While some of the times during the day may be adjusted the start and finish times will not change.

If you haven’t joined us before, we interview in team formats. Their will be interviews for the student applicants and their parents throughout the weekend. If you are new to this process, don’t worry, we will assist you.

We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you at the interviews. Also please feel free to invite someone you think would be interested in Rotary Youth Exchange who would be a good interviewer. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Heidi Filson
