ROTARY MEETING / TUESDAY 08-15-06NOTES FROM THE NOTETAKER No Guests today / however, good attendance by members, about 25! Rotary Minute:Kent suggested that we each develop and memorize an "Elevator Speech" to explain when someone asks us: "What is Rotary, anyway?" (The Notetaker believes we should come with the wording, and each Centennial member be required to memorize it!) Laurie wanted to especially thank Marc Garfinkel for organizing the social/going-away party for the Slyters. Also for everyone to pick up the new calendars with dates etc for all upcoming club events. Wild on Littleton Event: Mark Gale reminded everyone about this event on Sept 9th. He has received some volunteers via e-mail, and more signed up at our meeting. Wants to organize each of our 8 tables with a Team Leader. Also to have a pre-event social just before the activities begin. This is a great fundraiser for our club, and fun to boot! Macy's Opening Event: James reminded us that he needs reports on ticket sales ASAP. Peaches: Jennifer also reminded us that next Tuesday (Aug 22nd) is deadline for ordering peaches, and that pick-up day is Saturday (Aug 26th). HAPPY BUCKS:
SPEAKERSTopic: Pets (mostly dogs) - Training & Photography Patty and Elaine gave an excellent talk about the relationship of dogs and their owners in training, behavior, and socialization. The recent news about vicious dogs has caused many communities to review animal ordinances. Two viewpoints: "breed specific" and "behavior regardless of breed". Survey showed that 4.7 million Americans are bit by a dog each year, but vast majority of these bites could have been prevented by modifying behavior of the pet or the owner. Although some dogs are "pre-disposed" to certain temperament, Elaine does not believe that dog behavior is genetic. An owner must know their dog, and realize that training methods that works for some doesn't work for all. She is not a fan of the "Dog Parks" because they are risky as far as contact with non-vaccinated dogs, untrained dogs, and aggressive dogs that fight. In training a dog, it is important for the owner to be the "Leader", and reward behavior as needed with both "positive" methods and with "correction" methods. A question was put to the club: "What does the term 'Bad Dog' mean to you?" The creative answers by many in the audience were cause for considerable laughter! Jennifer topped everyone, however, with her comments that her rather aged dog doesn't respond much to commands anymore, just turns around and gives her the equivalent of the "doggie finger" and continues on his business! Elaine reemphasized how dogs reflect the human behavior they see …. Meeting adjourned.
