Rotary Minute by Kent

The new Compassionate care committee reminded Kent of last month’s theme, The Family of Rotary. He shared more details about it.

Fred from the University Hills Club passed out fliers with details about their upcoming fundraiser, a Super Bowl party to benefit Polio Plus and several of their own charities. It will be held at the Riverfront facility at the corner of Santa Fe and Bowles on Super Bowl Sunday from 3 p.m. till the end of the game. BBQ food, snacks and soft drinks are included in the $55 cost for adults. Super Bowl pool board squares will be available for purchase, along with a no-host bar. Contact Steve Whisenhunt at 303-522-7667 for more info.

RI Presidential dinner on 1/16. We need more people to sign up. A great event!!

The Bucks, Barb and the Garfinkels have committed to helping Cathy with food after this week’s chemo. Thank you!!

The piggy banks were returned and picked up by those who helped raise over $252. Please put your loose change in your pigs and we will have another collection date in the Spring. The total for the two collections will be matched by your Foundation for this year’s annual giving.

Jacque will be inducted in two weeks.

Mary Alice announced that the first planning meeting for the SOOC function will be at Greg’s at noon on 1/14. Let him know if you want to eat.

  • Frank gave a consolation buck for Jenn and the Buckeyes.
  • Roxy, $2, one ditto for Jenn and the other for a Happy New Year.
  • Randy gave $4, one for successful knee surgery, one for Tom’s birthday, one for being here and the other for seeing a woman riding the Rose Parade float that he competed against for DG in District 5300.
  • Tom for his birthday.
  • Paul gave several, thanking the Club for consideration during his hip makeover and probably mentioned the Broncos coaching situation.
  • Kent for Iowa’s success in their bowl game.
  • Mary Alice with no sympathy for Ohio State and a huge "go Big 12!" (She is from Texas, don’t ya know)
  • Andres for the prayers and good thoughts from members regarding the passing of his father-in-law on 12/11.
  • John for expecting another grandchild this May.
  • Jacque for having the opportunity to spend Tuesday’s with crazy folks.
  • Laurie for nice seeing Paul back.

Program

John McCarty gave his classification talk.

He began by apologizing for not having the quality presentation that Andres recently did. Andres made it tough for anyone to ever give a classification talk again.

John’s ancestors came over from Ireland in the mid 1800’s. His Grandfather was born in PA., became a MD in 1890 and moved to Berthoud, CO in 1892. He followed a school chum there who was opening a pharmacy.

His Dad was born in 1910, graduated from CU and the CU Medical School and became a doctor in Longmont.

John graduated from CU with a degree in civil engineering and something else.

He and his wife moved to Yucaipa, CA for 8 years after running his own firm here in CO. They moved back to CO after their children both graduated from CU.

He initially worked in El Paso county and moved to Denver last August. Their daughter is a physician in St. Louis and her husband is finishing his residency. Their son is an attorney for Western Union and their DIL is an attorney for D.R. Horton.

His wife is a registered nurse and serves as an occupational nurse for Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs.

His Rotary experiences include:

RYLA participant in his senior year in high school. His father was a Rotarian.

1977--proposed as member in Longmont Club. Served as President.

1989--became member of Yucaipa Club and served as President.

1986--Joined the E. Colorado Springs Club and yes, served as President. It was during Rotary’s Centennial year and was very special.

We are very lucky to have him.

He presently is with the SE Metro Storm Water Authority.

It was started in 2006 and takes care of the mandated Clean Water Act.

The Authority is funded through a line item on our property tax bill and has a budget of 8 million. 2 million is for capital projects, suck as a new water detention pond south of the Bronco facility.

There are more such projects planned in the future.
