Centennial Rotary General Meeting

On Tuesday, October 07, 2008

Greeter---Charlie
Custodian--Katherine
Invocation--Frank
Pledge--Dan

President Hank rang the bell early, 7:28 in an obvious attempt to impress the visiting District Governor, Steve Cantrell.

Kent introduced the visiting Rotarians and guests--Patty Burnett from Englewood, ADG Dim Castellano from Castle Rock lunch Club, Charles Tudor and his wife Joanne. Charles is a PDG from Crested Butte. Our only guest was Aric O. from the City Manager’s office with the City of Centennial.

Rotary Minute by Kent featured information about Rotaract. It is the bridge between Interact and main Rotary Clubs. It is for late teen and early twenty-something’s and we have several Clubs in our District. The closest is around the DU area.

Kim explained how she became involved with Rotary. She was invited to the Parker Club to speak about dead people several days before Christmas and was very impressed with our 4-way Test.

Program

Kent introduced our District Governor Steve Cantrell and his wife Mary.

Steve presented Katherine with this year’s "theme banner" as she was the newest member of our Club in attendance.

He spoke about finding your PASSION in Rotary. He shared a story about his speech at District Conference several years ago and how difficult it was to write until his thought about passion. Although a speech just before his touched on passion, both were different enough to make a difference.

He talked about Rotary’s main emphasis’--Child mortality--27,000 kids a day from preventable diseases.
1.1 billion people are without safe and clean water. 50% of the world suffers from malnutrition. 70% are unable to read and write.
We also must meet the Gates Foundation $100 million donation to finish the eradication of polio.

He shared we must have Rotarians with passion to accomplish all of the above. Without passion, the transition from a member of Rotary and a Rotarian will not happen.

He told us that he almost quit Rotary until he found his passion after PDG Krause "drug" him kicking to a child’s camp and he finally "got it."
It is our responsibility to help new members find their passion. He asked if our "passion" was contagious.

His final dream is that every Rotarian, every member of Rotary in our District do one random act of kindness every day.

In closing, he said that he was very impressed by our Board and our leader, President Hank.

Happy Bucks

Ben collected cash from the following for the following reasons

  • Marc for DG and his speech.
  • Frank gave the final buck from the sale of his stock.
  • Pete for some sort of bribe.
  • Dan for DG and seeing Tom Cycota.
  • Tom C. for Randy not being as obnoxious as expected.
  • $3 came from Roxy for the DG speed, our guest Aric and Kim not being as bad.
  • $3 from Mary Alice for the same three reasons.
  • Randy because it is Tuesday and Rotary.
  • Kim was happy to be here.
  • DG Steve was harassed into donating a buck because he was happy he woke up and was on time.
  • PDG Charles was happy to see old friends.
  • $3 from Hank for the DG, his wife Mary, PDG Charles and the good attendance.

Marbles

DG Steve was visibly upset when he drew Randy’s number, but elated when two clear were drawn.
